Bio

Elfrieda Lehman Porter passed away on March 10, 2016 at the age of 97 in Russellville, Arkansas where she moved in 2003 to be close to her daughter, Jo Dell Gateley. She died peacefully in her sleep due to heart failure and old age. Elfrieda was born in Paige, Texas on December 27, 1918 and lived there with her parents, Herman G. Lehman and Anne Muesse Lehman until 1949 when she moved to Austin to start her family with her husband, John B. Porter. She met John when he was stationed at Camp Swift during WWII and they were married during the war. They had two children, Byron and Jo Dell. When the kids were old enough to take care of themselves, she went to work for IRS and retired at age 62. After retirement Elfrieda and John worked on their projects at home but they loved to travel and spend time with siblings and family. They also loved to keep the grandkids for a while during the summer. John died in 2001. Elfrieda loved to play dominos and was in 42 domino club it seemed like forever and she was always looking for a domino game after moving to Arkansas. She started making jewelry in Arkansas and continued until after age 95 when she could not get her hands to move to string the beads. She also loved to play slot machines. She was always very friendly and almost everyone seemed to like her. Several family and friends adopted her as their surrogate mother after losing their own mother. She will be missed by all who know her. Elfrieda is survived by her, son Byron W. Porter and daughter, Jo Dell (James) Gateley, her grandsons Patrick Porter, John Paul Porter, Andrew Porter, Eric Gateley and Adam Gateley and 4 great-grandsons. Visitation for Elfrieda will be at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas 78752. A Funeral Service will be held in the afternoon at Cook-Walden Funeral Home with interment to follow at Memorial Hill Cemetery in Pflugerville.
