Robert "Bob" Hegemann, 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, January 6, 2025, in Fremont, Nebraska. Bob was born on August 27, 1935, in Howells, Nebraska, to Theodore and Dorothea (Pieper) Hegemann. He attended Saints Peter and Paul Grade School in Howells, where he built the foundation of his faith and values that guided him throughout his life. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from November 1954 to September 1956, stationed in Alaska as a cook. In his downtime, he set bowling pins at a local alley to earn extra money for postage, writing letters to the love of his life, Alice Kaup. They met at the Howells Ballroom, where Bob asked her to dance. That first dance led to a lifetime of love, sealed with a kiss on the cheek and their marriage on February 20, 1957, at Saint Aloysius Catholic Church in Aloys, Nebraska. In the early years of their marriage, Bob and Alice lived south of Howells before settling in Fremont, Nebraska, in March 1964. A talented carpenter, Bob owned and operated Hegemann Construction, building numerous homes in and around Fremont. His craftsmanship was exemplified in the home he built for his own family—a source of immense pride. He passed his passion for construction to his son, Paul, and grandson, Bryce, both of whom followed in his footsteps with their own construction businesses. A devoted community servant, Bob gave generously of his time and talents. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a faithful blood donor for the Red Cross, a long-time volunteer for St. Patrick's Parish, and a Eucharistic Minister alongside Alice. He served on the Parish Council, organized the Cake Walk at parish festivals, called Bingo on Wednesday nights, and loved fishing and visiting the local casinos. Tuesday nights were reserved for bowling, where he sponsored and played on the Hegemann Construction team. Saturday nights, however, were for dancing with Alice—a shared passion they perfected during dance lessons that extended for years. Together, they were admired for their graceful moves, bringing joy to those who watched them. Bob and Alice embraced every day, balancing their devotion to faith, family, and community with their many interests. From tending their flourishing garden to dancing the night away, they exemplified love and generosity. Bob enjoyed sharing stories with any family, friend, or stranger. Bob's legacy lives on in his children: Doreen (Bill) Beaudette of Fremont, Lorie (Joel) Scherling of Lincoln, Paul (Laurie) Hegemann of Fremont, Steven (Jennifer) Hegemann of Lincoln, and his daughter-in-law, Kimberly Hegemann of Littleton, Colorado. He is also survived by his siblings, Victor (Mary Ann) Hegemann of Southlake, Texas, and Sister Dorothea (formerly Myriam) Hegemann of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Hegemann of Howells, Patricia Kaup, and Doris Kaup; and his many beloved grandchildren: Bryce (Tracey) Kolund, Benjamin (Sydney) Beaudette, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Alexander Hegemann, Megan (Niraj) Patel, Jared Scherling, Schuyler, Dominick, Phoenix, Zayne, Ella Rose, Barrett, William, Joseph, and Heinrich Hegemann. Bob was blessed with great-grandchildren Shea, August, and Ellis Kolund, Ravi Patel, and Cooper Beaudette. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice; his parents, Theodore and Dorothea; his son, Allen (Al) Hegemann; grandson, Nicholas Hegemann; siblings Adolf Hegemann, Raymond Hegemann, Leonard Hegemann, Joe Hegemann, Adella Fendrick, Helen Schlautman, Arlene Doerneman, Sister Dorelia Hegemann, Marie Kruger and Kathleen Baumert; brothers- and sisters-in-law Lorene Hegemann, Arlene Hegemann, Cecilia Hegemann, Jerome Fendrick, Richard Schlautman, Rueben Doerneman, Marius Kruger, Hubert Baumert, Leander Kaup, Clarence Kaup, and Frank and Marjorie Hagedorn. Bob will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a skilled craftsman, and a generous friend to all. Long story short, his legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him. The Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM, Monday, January 13, 2025, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with a Knights of Columbus Living Rosary said at 7:00 PM following the visitation. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.
