Bio

John married Mary Ann Scarbrough, daughter of William Milton and Deniza Hambright Scarbough. Their children in the 1880 and 1900 census were Sallie J., John F., William V., Cora K., Gussie W., Patrick H., Daisy M., and Julia. Mary Ann said in the 1900 census that she had been married for 36 years, had 9 children, 7 still living. John and his brother William were merchants and apparently had many customers to default on their debts owed them, and the McMinn County court records are full of litigation trying to recover some of the money. One piece of litigation names most of the children and was filed 20th May 1885 on behalf of the children. When John's brother William died each brother and sister was to be given a thousand dollars to educate their children, but they must not have received it.
