Bio

Mary Ann was the daughter of William Milton Scarbrough and Deniza Hambright. Her siblings were Lavina, William Franklin, Sarah and Thursa Kizzar. They also had Urana, James and Martha, who all died at an early age, and an unnamed infant who died at birth. She was married about 1864 to John A. Turley and they were parents of 8 children as shown in the 1880 and 1900 census. They were Sallie (Cleveland), John F., William V., Cora K., Gussie (Davis), Patrick H., Daisy M. and Julia. At that time Mary Ann said she and John had been married for 36 years, had 7 children, all still living. (That makes 8, wonder which one she forgot?) For more information on this family one should look in the county court records of McMinn, for there are numerous pieces of litigation involving their attempt to collect debts owed them by patrons of their store. Mary Ann appears to even have sued John in 1885 over money that should have been left by brother William to educate the children, but must not have been given to them.
