John Harrison Craig (October 10, 1817 ~ January 12, 1895) *** Craig - At his home in East Galena on Saturday, January 12, 1895, at 6 o’clock p.m., John Harrison Craig; aged, 77 years, 3 months and 2 days. Deceased was born in Danville, Montgomery county, Mo., Oct. 10, 1817. His early life was spent in the county in which he was born. He was left at an early age an orphan with the care of the family, consisting of himself and five sisters, devolving upon him. He was three times married and has reared a family of eight sons and six daughters, besides a step-son. Eleven of these children are now living. When the late rebellion was declared he enlisted as a volunteer in troop C, ninth Missouri cavalry. He served three years and re-enlisted in company K, forty-ninth Missouri infantry, serving four years altogether. After the war closed, he spent his time upon his farm in Montgomery county until six years ago last September, when by accident he received an injury which resulted in the loss of his speech and for the past eighteen months has been an invalid confined to his home and for almost a year to the chair, being unable to lie down. He was an earnest, uncompromising Christian; a man who never swerved from duty, one who took up the burdens and crosses of life cheerfully. He passed away peacefully and quietly while sitting in his chair. All of his children were present, except one daughter living in Pueblo, Colo. Mr. Craig was a member of the G. A. R. post at New Florence, Mo., until he removed to Kansas in 1890, and from that time has been a member of Frank P. Blair post of Galena.
