Bio

Parents Thomas Huddleston and Melinda Stinson of Fentress County Tennessee. Joel was a Minister in the Christian Church. The Huddleston families of Overton/Fentress counties were very split on Civil War. The Huddlestons fought on both sides. Joel Green Huddleston II joined Co, D, 1st TN Mtd Inf. USA. He was 18 years old when he joined in March 1864 at Jamestown TN. He was promoted to Corp. on 20 Feb 1864. Joel was named for his uncle Joel Green Huddleston who was born in 1818 and died at Belle Isle Prison in Richmond, VA 20 Mar 1864 in the Military Prison. Uncle Joel was in Co F, 1st KY Cal. He was captured at Battle of Bean's Station in TN. Dec 1863. There was so much hard family feelings in that area of Tennessee, that Joel moved his family up to Cumberland County Ky abt 1887. He moved to Collin County Texas in 1893. In 1900 he was advised by his dear friend and cousin, James Alonzo Goodbar, to move to Mineral Wells for his health. TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF ELDER J. G. HUDDLESTON By R. C. Horn The recent passing into the better life of Elder J. G. Huddleston at his home at Mineral Wells where he had resided for about 20 years removes from the walks of men one of God's noble men. Born in Overton Co. Tennessee in 1845, where he grew up and married. He came to Texas about thirty years ago and lived for several years east of McKinney on the Milligan farm and on the Col. Coffey old home place. He later moved to the Johnson community where he remained for two years before moving to the wells. When about thirty years old I think he entered the ministry of the Christian Church. He faithfully preached the gospel until age and ill health prevented active work in the church. As a preacher, he was clear and logical. He was humble, free from jealousy of other ministers. The writer held a meeting with him at Mt. Zion Church a few years before he moved to Mineral Wells in which I did the preaching and he the baptizing. He was an expert in this work. It was never my privilege to labor with a more humble and consecrated minister. He delivered many exhortations following my discourses. The meeting resulted in nearly fifty additions, many whom responded to his earnest appeals.
