Johanna Kojetin was born on 12 July 1905 in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to Wencel J. and Mary A. Horejsi Kojetin, where she later attended country school. Johanna was the eighth of nine children born to Wencel and Mary. She had two brothers, John who died in infancy, and Wencel who married Catherine Kodet; and, six sisters, Mary who married John A. Kodet, Anna who married John Wilt, Josephine who married Henry F. Frank, Emma who married George Halliday, Barbara who married Alois Kodet, and Angela who married Henry P. Frank. Johanna married James Wertish, the son of Wenzel and Catherine Malecek Wertish, on 14 September 1926, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. They farmed in the Olivia area until they retired in Olivia. Johanna and James had ten children. Johanna was a housekeeper for Reverend Ralph Hayden at St. Aloysius Catholic Church for several years, a cook at the Renville County Hospital, and a long-time 4-H leader. She had been a resident of the Bird Island Manor and Olivia Health Care Center for the two years prior to her death. Johanna Kojetin Wertish, of Olivia, died at the age of 88, on Monday, 13 December 1993, at the Olivia Health Care Center in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Johanna was survived by her ten children, Martha Macik of Hector; Cyril (Arlene) Wertish of McAllen, Texas; Leo Wertish of Delano; Elizabeth (Joseph) Anderlik of St. Paul; Bernadine (Jerome) Anderson of Eden Prairie; Wencel (Ardis) Wertish of Olivia, Judy (James) Kieffer of Austin, Texas; Jane (Charles) Osterfeld of Excelsior; Mary (David) Wetzel of Brownsville; and Carol (Robert) Listerud of Renville; 31 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Wencel Kojetin, of Willmar. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; one granddaughter; and five sisters. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, 17 December 1993, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Pallbearers were Johanna’s grandsons. She was buried in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota.
