He was the fourth son of Daniel Boone Slater , 1854-1924 and Nannie Elizabeth Bell Slater , 1863-1939, who migrated to Nolan County, Texas from Missouri. He was the third of their seven children to be born in Texas. Birth order and names of those children are: 1. George M. Slater , b:Jul 15,1886, Missouri d:Oct 4,1918, Texas 2. Thomas Earnest "Tom" Slater , b:Feb 19,1888, Iowa d:Mar 9,1963, Iowa 3. Mary Caroline "Callie" Slater Chaney , b:Dec 20,1889, Texas d:Aug 12,1962, Texas 4. James Austin "Jim" Slater , b:Oct 5,1891, Texas d:Feb 28,1962, Texas 5. (William Vining Boone "Bill" Slater, b:May 20,1893, Texas d:Jun 6,1966, Texas) 6. Susan M. "Susie" Slater Wilderspin , b:Jan, 1896, Texas d: Jun 23,1962 7. Benjamin Vachel Slater , b:Aug 12,1905, Texas d:Mar,1981, Texas In 1913 William Vining Boone "Bill" Slater, b:1893 Texas, married Miss Josephine Belle Weems , b.1958 Texas. Their fathers were men of integrity and close friends who trusted each other. William L. Weems chose Daniel Boone Slater to serve as bondsman for Josephine's endowment and Daniel accepted. Bill and Josie settled in Nolan County, Texas near his parents, Nannie Elizabeth Bell and Daniel Boone Slater. Bill worked for the Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific Railroad and Josephine kept house. Five children were born of this union. Birth order and names are as follows: 1. Twin boy, b: 1915 in Texas 2. Twin boy, b: 1915 in Texas 3. Willie Orlean "Willene" Slater , b: January 10, 1917 d: May 11, 1957 in Texas 4. Charles A. Slater , b: August 12, 1918, d: June 30, 1920 in Texas 5. George Vining "GV" Slater , b: July 5, 1921, d: May 18, 1933 in Texas On January 31, 1923, Josie died of food poisoning and on April 20, 1923, Bill married Miss Hattie Viola Lewis , b:1895 Scurry County, d: 1989 Roscoe, Nolan County, daughter of Randolph Kay and Mary Elizabeth Miller Lewis . Hattie brought with her one daughter, LaVerne Faye Lewis , b: Feb. 11, 1916 d: Nov 22, 1970. To this blended family, Bill and Hattie added two more children. 6. Cecil Shirley Slater b: Jan. 9, 1926 in Texas d: Dec. 17, 2011 in New York 7. Living Slater b: in Texas Bill worked for RS&P RR for over forty years in many positions, from watchman to engineer. His career spanned an era that extended from steam to diesel locomotives and for him, it was truly a labor of love. The environment in which he worked took a heavy toll on his respiratory health and he died of emphysema on June 6, 1966. He is buried in the Roscoe Cemetery, Roscoe, Nolan County, Texas.
