Source: Daily Ardmoreite MARIETTA -- Services for David A. Shellenberger, 76, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at the First Baptist Church in Marietta with Bro. Ronnie Carroll officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. Shellenberger was born March 3, 1923, at Marietta, Love County, Okla., to Frank A. and Lillie B. Greenwood Shellenberger. He died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at his residence. A resident of Love County most of his life, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater, and among the medals he received were the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Ribbon and a Bronze Service Star. He was a ranch hand most of his life, working on several ranches in the area, and had been a gold card life-member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 1939. He was chiefly known nationwide for his rodeo accomplishments in bull riding and calf roping. In later years, he was the proprietor of the Hole-In-The-Wall, north of Marietta, where the Oklahoma State Chili Cook-Off originated. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He and Mary Lou Holland were married Jan. 14, 1981, in Love County. A special thanks to JoAnn Holland for leading David to the Lord, and her daughter, Kristi, for taking care of David. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; a son, David Lee Shellenberger, Pauls Valley; daughters and sons-in-law, Lillyn and Jerry Norton, Pauls Valley, Becky and Bryce Evans, Mesquite, Texas, Kim and Tom Best, also Pauls Valley; a brother, C.J. Shellenberger, Gainesville, Texas; sisters, Belle Wanda "Sis" Shellenberger and Joyce Buckholtz, Marietta; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Bearers will be Mike Callihan, Mark Callihan, J.W. Hart, Cody Hart, Waylon Brown and Johnny Hartman. Honorary bearers are Johnny Williams, Dr. J.T. O'Connor Jr., Dr. Kevin Reed, Dr. Scholer, Orvil Brown, Jackie Cross, Junior Turner, Herb Dalton, Randall Colston, Jerry Harper and all the cowboys with whom he rodeoed. Memorials may be made to Cross Timbers Hospice, 1514 Meadow Lane, Ardmore, OK 73401. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at Kennedy Funeral Home.
