Bio

Irvine A. Obermiller, age 87, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at his home in Grand Island, NE. He was born on January 15, 1915 at the family home in rural Farwell, NE. His parents were Albert and Isabelle (Irvine) Obermiller. When he was five, his family moved to rural Loup City, NE and he attended Wiggle Creek and Loup City High schools. After graduating from high school, Irvine taught school for two years at District 81 in Sherman County. He then attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for three years and the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1940. While attending college in Omaha, Mr. Obermiller worked as a Dairy Farm Inspector for the Nebraska-Iowa Milk Association. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed in Bakersfield, California. He was honorably discharged due to ill health. He returned to Loup City to recuperate and then moved to Omaha where he was employed again at the Nebraska – Iowa Milk Association. Later, he relocated to Washington State and worked for the paper mills there. He also helped with the harvest of his father's land in Texas. Upon the sale of the Texas land, Irvine returned to Loup City where he farmed and fed cattle. He also worked part time at the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island, NE. Mr. Obermiller was a member of the Loup City VFW and a lifetime member of the Loup City American Legion Post 48. He enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Nebraska football fan. He was preceded in death by his wives, Marian Barnett, and Ella McChesney, one infant step-grandson; brothers, Leonard, George and Orville; and two sisters, Mildred Heil and Margaret Kieborz. Services were held at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island, NE. The Rev. Ray Schroeder officiated. Inurnment was in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
