Augusta was named for her grandmothers Rachel Augusta Childs (1869-1901) and Rebecca Celia Turner (1853-1932). After graduating from high school in 1934, "Gug" worked for the Violet Gin Company at $20 per week (for 16-hour days). She wanted to go to college, but could not afford it. Jerome W. Jalufka, who owned the cotton gin in the Oso community, offered to pay her tuition if she attended business college and study bookkeeping. She worked for Mr. Jalufka on and off for nine years. She quit in 1941 when she married, but two years later Mr. Jalufka offered her 60 cents per hour and an apartment to go back to work for him. Gug did so, as "this was big money!" Augusta was a professional bookkeeper for over forty years, and her work brought her much joy. In addition to the Corpus Christi area, she lived in Nogales, Arizona and Fresno, California for many years. In 1989 she retired and returned to Texas, settling in the town of Orange Grove, near her sister Nan. She traveled abroad to various cities and states. Gug met many people during her life, and she never met a stranger. She was well-loved and is missed by many nieces and nephews.
