Bio

Inez was nearly five years old when her mother died. She and her family subsequently moved to nearby McLennan County, Texas, where Inez attended school in the town of Mart. Inez was sent to Nueces County to live with the Baldwin family on the Baldwin Ranch. Her father and siblings joined her in South Texas by 1912. Inez finished her education at the original Oso School, which Carl Allen also attended. On June 14, 1917 Inez and Carl were married at the Baldwin Ranch by a visiting priest, Rev. Puiz, who traveled by horseback about every six months to perform marriages and baptism in remote communities. Inez was a charter member of the Oso Home Demonstration Club. She was active in school organizations and activities and was a 4-H leader. Inez was a member of the Altar Society of St. Anthony's Church in Violet, Texas and was active in all parish organizations and fundraisers through the years. During her life with Carl Allen in Oso community, Inez and other local women would take chickens, cakes, pies, eggs, butter and other goods to sell to consumers in Corpus Christi. They then went to the Weil Brothers grocery store (at Lawrence and North Mesquite streets in Corpus) and their staples as well as cattle feed. The cattle feed was in printed sacks, which Inez used to make shirts and dresses for her children. Inez and Carl always had a big Christmas for their children. Her daughter Augusta recalled that they would cut a tree from their pasture, then decorate it with homemade decorations (popcorn, cranberries and colored construction paper). The giftwrap was saved from year to year. The children found gifts around the farm to give to each other. The gifts they received from Santa included handkerchiefs, socks and underwear. That Ammie was a remarkably warm and loving person was evident from the memories of her children and grandchildren. Decades after her death many who knew her could scarcely speak of her without tears.
