Bio

Francis “Frank” Bartes was born on 01 April 1903, to Mike and Mary Prochazka Bartes, in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska. He and his family moved to Renville County when he was a child. On 17 April 1938, he married Gertrude M. Serbus, the daughter of John William and Mary Ann Kojetin Serbus, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota. Frank and Gertrude were lifelong farmers and lived on a farm north of Olivia where they raised their four children, Mildred Marie, Margaret Mary, Sylvia Frances, and Gabriel. They were members of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Frank’s wife, Gertrude M. Serbus Bartes, died at home in her sleep, at the age of 61, on Thursday, 19 August 1969, in Kingman Township, Renville County, Minnesota. Francis “Frank” Bartes, of Olivia, Minnesota, died at the age of 91, on Monday, 24 October 1994, at the Olivia Healthcare Center in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Frank was survived by his daughters, Margaret (Anthony) Riggio of Albany, California, and Sylvia Bartes of San Diego, California; three granddaughters, Val Turner, Donna Louis, and Susan Riggio; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Mary Bartes; wife, Gertrude; daughter, Mildred Bartes; brother, John Bartes; and sisters, Julia Serbus and Mary Kudera. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, 27 October 1994, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Frank was buried beside his wife, Gertrude, in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Pallbearers were Gary Mages, John and Doug O’Neill, Ed and Earnie Steffel, Ray Lingl, Wally Serbus, and Bernard Bartes.
