Bio
Matej (Michael) Bartes was born in Bohemia, the son of Joe Bartes. In 1888, at the age of 39, he immigrated to America. Michael settled in Nebraska where he married Marie Prochazka. They lived in Nebraska for 25 years prior to moving to Minnesota in 1913. Michael and his wife purchased the Garity farm, which was located eight miles South of Olivia, Minnesota. In 1917, they moved back to Nebraska and in 1922, his wife died from stomach cancer. After his wife's death, Michael made his home with his son, John, near Bechyn, Minnesota. Michael died on 15 March 1933. Pallbearers at his funeral were John and Charles Swoboda, Frank Serbus, Anton Wertish, Albert Rejsek, and Louis Swatash. Michael was survived by his two sons, John and Frank, and his two daughters, Mrs. Julius Kudera and Mrs. Julia (Adolph) Serbus.
