Bio

St Paul Republican St Paul, Howard County, Nebraska Thursday, August 15, 1918, page one Pioneer Called to His Final Rest Monday, the word was passed around that one of our old residents and highly respected citizens had been summoned to the great beyond. With the going of this fine old gentleman, it forcibly calls to our mind that the ranks of those who came to this county in the early days and faced the various dangers that confronted them, with unshaken nerve, that we who are permitted to call the fine community, that they have built up, our home. We who now enjoy the comforts of a community such as we have here do not fully appreciate what has been done by the early settlers of which Mr. Irvine was one. John Irvine was born at Roxbyshire, Scotland, August 15, 1853 and died at his home at St. Paul, Nebraska on August 12, at 12:10 a.m., being at the time of his death, 64 years, 11 months and 27 days old. He came to America with his parents in June, 1873 and homesteaded near Farwell where he made his home until three years ago when he removed to St. Paul. On July 9, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Isabella Gordon. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Irvine, two of whom are living: Isabella Obermiller and Mary Alice Larsen, both of Farwell. Three children died in infancy: Alice, when but four months old, Janet at the age of four years and John, a babe of six weeks. His wife died on April 11, 1913. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his two daughters, two brothers and two sisters, James Sr. of St. Paul, Henry of Hastings, Mrs. Lizzie Shortridge of Scotland and Mrs. Christina (James) Baxter of Farwell. His brothers who have departed from this life are Robert, who died in Scotland, Archibald, who was killed at Casper, Wyo., William, who died at Lincoln, and George at Farwell. Mr. Irvine was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the Masonic and Elk lodges. The services were conducted in the Presbyterian church by Rev. C. A. Kircher. Interment being made in the family lot in VanCott cemetery near Farwell by the side of those of his family who have preceded him to that home of everlasting happiness. obit courtesy of Pat M (#46936266)
