St. Paul Republican Thursday Nov 8, 1917 Page 1 GEORGE IRVINE PASSES AWAY George Irvine, who enjoyed the distinction of being one of the first resident settles of Howard County, had been a potent factor in the development of the agricultural resources of that locality. He in know throughout the region as a prosperous and energetic farmer and through stockman and owns a fine estate in Kelso Precinct. George Irvine was born in Roxburyshire, Scotland on December 21, 1848 and grew up in that county, coming to America in 1870. He first came to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MIch. He came to Nebraska in 1871, his first stopping place being at Omaha and from there he went to Columbus, remaining in that vicinity a few days looking for a desirable location. Not finding anything that suited him he came to Grand Island and from there to Howard Co. Here he spent a few days looking over land, returned to Grand Island and finally came back to Howard Co., during the later part of March making settlement on a tract situated on Oak Creek, April 6, 1871. James Baxter, Alex Lamb and a brother James Irvine settled on adjoining claims and they were the first white settlers in the locality. They passed through all the incidents of early pioneer like in Nebraska and to these same men and other of their character the state owes its success. Mr. Irvine's claim was situated on Section 24 Township 14 Range 12 and this claim still remains his homeplace. He occupied for years his original dwelling, which was a dug out, the first erected in the vicinity, but several years later built a fine residence and his family are among the popular members of society in their neighborhood.. Mr. Irvine is owner of 900 acres of as fine of land as one ever saw and he is called one of the wealthiest men of this county. Mr. Irvine was married on Dec. 26, 1873 to Sarah Elizabeth Kerr, who resided east of Farwell, Mr. & Mrs. Irvine were married by James Baxter, who is a brother in law of the deceased and for many years Justice of the Peace. To the union 6 children were born, two sons and 4 daughters, James Irvine, Mrs. Nellie Kaiser, Mrs. Geo Kesch, Mrs. Jennie Obermiller, Mary Delia and John Robert residing at home with their mother, also 10 grand children all of Howard County. 3 brothers, James, John and Henry, also two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Shortread of Scotland and Mrs. James Baxter, Sr. of Farwell. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon. The sermon being delivered by Rev. P.A. Davies of this city and the Masonic Lodge had charge of the services at the grave using their ritualistic services. Internment being made in the Presbyterian Cem southwest of Farewell. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in this section of the state.
