St. Paul Republican, St. Paul, Nebraska, Thursday, November 22, 1906, No. 798, page 1, column 5. Another Pioneer Gone The Farwell Journal last week printed the following obituary notice of James Irvine, Sr., whose death was briefly mentioned by the REPUBLICAN: James Irvine, who died last Tuesday at the home of J.A. Baxter, was one of the pioneers of Howard county. Mr. Irvine, was born near Kelso, Scotland, in the year 1816. In 1841, he was married to Miss Jennet Lock. To this union, nine children were born, seven boys and two girls, the majority of whom are still residents of Howard county and well known to its citizens. In the year 1873, he, together with his family, came to Nebraska and settled on Oak creek in what is now Kelso. Mr. Irvine was one of the promoters, and it was through his and his friends’ efforts that the precinct bears the name of his birthplace. After a few years of frontier life together, his esteemed wife was called to her final home, having died in February, 1880. Mr. Irvine’s demise leaves a vacancy in the ranks of the pioneers of Howard county. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church, Rev. Longstaff performing the last sad rites. Interment in the Presbyterian cemetery.” Obit. courtesy of Pat M. Find-A-Grave contributor #46936266.
