Bio

Son of Wojciech & Elizabeth (Dembay) Grzechowiak. Married to Catherine Szawica Zaucha. Note: Records for Andrew in America occasionally give his name as ANDREW DEBNEY ----------------------------- So far, the location of the birth of Andrew in Poland has not been confirmed. The family history and verbal accounts of him, indicate he was married in Poland to an, as yet, unknown wife and they had four children, three of whom met with accidental and painful deaths while quite young. Nothing is known of the surviving child of the first marriage. According to his own words, he had been in America since 3rd June, 1879 (sic), lived first in Parkersburg, VA., married in Poland a year before he came to America; had one child before coming to America and that child was scalded to death in America; two burned to death in Platte county; and the (first) wife died in 1879 (in Platte or Nance county) from the bite of a rattlesnake. ========================================================== The articles below relate an incident around the right period so I am wondering if this is the fire? The Columbus Era, May 4, 1878 DIED DOMINIK--On Wednesday morning, this week, Stearn's Prairie was the scene of a sad and startling accident. Mr. Andrew Dominik house, two children and furniture were consumed by fire under the following circumstances: Mr. Dominik was away from home on business, and Mrs. Dominik was in the corn field at work. Two little children were left in the house, one and a half and four years of age. By some means the house caught fire, and destroyed children, house and all. There was no fire left in the house, leaving a strong suspicion that it was the devilish work of an incendiary. The house was a dug-out, and somewhat obscure, so the flames were not discovered until too late. This is one of the most painfully sad accidents it has yet been our duty to record. The Columbus Journal, May 8, 1878 DIED DOMINIK--Another warning to parents who leave very young children alone to care for themselves come from Stearns Prairie. Two children, one fifteen months old, the other four years were left by themselves--the father being absent from the home, the mother planting corn a short distance from the house. By some means unknown the house caught fire and was burned down, destroying the children. Our informant could not give the name of the parents. We notice that the Era gives it as Dominik. =========================================================================================== Two Grzechowiak burials reported in the St. Anthony of Padura church records (included in the TARNOV anniversary book) "Sofia" Grzechowiak buried May 1878 "Catharina" Grzechowiak buried July 29, 1878 no ages given ∼ Case #982
