Thanks to contributor #47723180 posted at theindependent.com 9/22/2000 Elvina Collins SCOTIA - Elvina VanSlyke Collins, of Scotia died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul, Nebraska Services will be at 2 p.m. at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be before service time on Saturday. Memorials are the Scotia Rescue Unit or to the Playground Equipment Fund at Scotia Park. Mrs. Collins was born on Nov. 5, 1900, six miles east of Ord in Springdale to Chris and Emma Thomsen. She grew up on the family farm and was educated at the Springdale Rural School until the 11th grade. She graduated from Ord High School in 1920. She married Floyd VanSlyke on Feb. 21, 1923 at Ord. The couple lived on several farms north Ord. Mr. VanSlyke died on Jan. 11, 1951. She remained on the farm until the fall of 1954, when she moved into Ord. She worked at the Cozy Nook and the Highway Cafe. She married Joseph Robert "Bob" Collins on July 5, 1958, at Hartington. The couple lived on various farms in Nebraska and then lived in Clarks. Mr. Collins died on July 24, 1971. Mrs. Collins remained in Clarks until October 1971, when she moved to Scotia. She enjoyed work and gardening. Survivors one son, Ray VanSlyke of Scotia; one daughter, Laura Ann Merritt of Oregon City, Ore.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Emory, Harvey and James; and three sisters, Anne Thomsen, Pearl Cook and Amy Hansen.
