Bio

(KS) Belleville Telescope Feb. 26, 1931 Jan M. Moravek John Mathias Moravek was born in Czechoslovakia near Vysoke Myto, December 1, 1847. He came to the United States with his parents when but nine years old, and settled near Marshalltown, IA. He lived there until the year 1871 when he drove a yoke of oxen across the plains and took a homestead in Fairview township, six miles northeast of Belleville, part of which he owned until his death. On October 30, 1875 he was united in marriage to Anna Shara, in whom he found a very faithful as well as loving and industrious mate, who helped him bear the hardships of a homesteader's life. To their union seven children were born, one of whom, Mellissa died when but five years old. They lived on their homestead until 1905 when they retired from farming and built a home at the south edge of Munden where they lived until 1927 when they moved to Pasadena, Cal. There they were living with a daughter, Emma Moravek at the time of his death, February 17, 1931, at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 16 days. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife; three sons, John R. and Adolph M. of Munden, and Joe H. of Topeka; three daughters. Mrs. Elsie Gerard of Fairbury, Neb., Mrs. Kristie Peterka of Cuba, and Miss Emma Moravek of Pasedena, Cal., also one brother J.J. Moravek of Washington, Kan., and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Shakelton, Mrs. Emma Kindler, and Mrs. Mary Lorence of Esbon, Kan., besides ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. The body was crenated at Pasedena where the remains will be kept to be buried at the Tabor cemetery at some future date. -- Information provided by jln #48112406
