William Cowden Simmons February 8, 1840 ~ July 3, 1916 William Cowden Simmons was the 4th child of 13 children born to Joseph E. Simmons and his wife, Martha Amanda Cowden Simmons (married 1832). The family moved from Missouri to Texas in 1844 and settled near the present town of Ben Franklin. On Christmas Eve of 1853 ~ at the age of 13 ~ he became a member of the Methodist Church. Family history states that on April 25, 1858, William married Martha E. Kennedy (if correct, there are no known children .. nor is there any further information on her). He married Mary Clay Robnett on December 20, 1866. The couple was the parents of 11 children. William had enlisted in the CSA at Paris, Texas in Company H, 9th Texas Cavalry, Ross Brigade on the south side, where he was a Private. Participating in as many as 100 battles and skirmishes, he served during the entire Civil War and was slightly wounded three times. The Simmons family was well thought of in the Yowell/Commerce area. On Feb 8, 1910, a newspaper article was printed about the community back in William's childhood ~ in addition to facts about his life and his 70th birthday celebration. This "fine dinner" was attended by 40+ family and friends. At 76 years of age, William transitioned from this life to eternity. Two years later, Mary Clay was laid to rest beside her beloved husband in the Shiloh Cemetery. ~âž~Family records indicate the following children died in infancy. Their dates of death and locations of their graves are unknown: George - b. 10-16-1867 Joseph H. - b. 1-9-1872 William Croffard (Crawford) - b. 10-24-1889
