Bio
Martha Amanda Cowden ~ daughter of Mary Kelso (1796-1883) and John Cowden (1789-1855) ~ was born in Forest Hills, Bedford County, Tennessee on July 1, 1816. In about 1833, Martha married Joseph Ephraim Simmons Sr. in Greene County, Missouri. She gave birth to thirteen children ~ including two sets of twins. All her children lived to adulthood except three daughters. Her children were: George Washington Simmons, 1834-1863, killed at the Battle of Chickamauga, during the Civil War Elizabeth Caroline Simmons (Pearson) 1836-1884 Mary Jane Simmons (Hunt) 1838-1891 William Cowden Simmons 1840-1916 Margaret E. Simmons (Ward) 1842-1922 John N. Simmons 1844-1873 Benjamin Franklin Simmons 1846-1922 Joseph Ed Simmons 1848-1905 David P. (Paul or Phillip) Simmons 1850-1910 Melvina Simmons (twin to Susan) 1852-1852, died at birth Susan Simmons (twin to Melvina) 1852-1852, died at birth Martha Amanda Simmons (twin to Susan Melvina) 1854-1928 Susan Melvina Simmons (twin to Martha Amanda) 1854-1859. Martha died on April 4, 1854 giving birth to twin daughters ~ Martha Amanda and Susan Melvina. She was thirty-seven years old.
