Bio

Johnnie Marion "Al" Gilbert was born January 26, 1959 at Burneyville, OK, the son of Dallas Dean and Leota Odessa Buckhanon Gilbert. He passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012 in the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 53. A lifetime resident of this area, Al grew up at Leon where he attended school and then attended Turner High School. At the age of 15 he began working with concrete contractors. Al was very skilled at his trade and admired by contractors who knew him as "a man who could trowel with both hands." He and Cynthia Collom were married at Lake Murray on May 24, 1982. Al enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, camping and fishing. He was a member of the Leon Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his father, Dallas Dean Gilbert; mother, Odessa Hunt; dad, Pete Hunt; five brothers, Thurman Gilbert, Glen Gilbert, Carol Gilbert, Jimmy Gilbert and Brad Blakely; and nephew, Gil Gilbert. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia of the home in Marietta; girlfriend, Melanie Middaugh of Ardmore; son and daughter-in-law, Alec and Ashley Gilbert of Marietta; two daughters, Ryan Gilbert of Tishomingo, OK and Emily Gilbert of Ardmore; two brothers, Ricky Gilbert of Ardmore and Kenneth Gilbert of Healdton, OK; four sisters, Carolyn Gwin of Tulsa, OK, Debra Key of Overbrook, OK, Janice Cantrell of Gainesville, TX and Cathy Dalton of Pauls Valley, OK; 13 grandchildren, Abigail, Brandon and Brooklyn Gilbert, Ashton, Landon, Mason, Samson and Autumn LaFrance, Little Caleb and David Grayson, Abby Downs, Levi Love and Madison Cheek; former daughter-in-law, Melissa Cheek of Ardmore; and numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary bearers are Tony Ironwing, Fred Ross, Johnny Abshire, Jason Abshire, Allen Moss, Dan LaFrance, Darren Brooks, Daniel Brooks, Shane Clark, Joey Boatner, Craig Sparks, Cody Pierce and Caleb Grayson.
