Web posted April 25, 2006 in the Ardmoreite LEON -- Services for Thurman "Chief" Gilbert, 59, of Gainesville, TX held on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Leon Baptist Church with Bro. George Nikitenko officiating. Interment will be at Leon Cemetery under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home. Born on Feb. 26, 1947, in Leon to Dallas Dean and Leota Odessa Buckhanon Gilbert, he died on Saturday, April 22, 2006, in the Gainesville, Texas, hospital. He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Calvin Glenn Gilbert and Carroll Eugene Gilbert; grandmother, Lillie Buckhanon; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nova and Joe Chapman. Married to Nova Diane Chapman on Nov. 11, 1968, in Pittsburg, Texas, he lived in Marietta before moving to Gainesville in 1981. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry, spending a year in Vietnam, and was awarded numerous medals, including a Purple Heart with Bronze Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal. Mr. Gilbert was also a member of the Texas National Guard and a lifetime member of the DAV and VFW. He was an assembler at Weber Aircraft in Gainesville and member of Teamsters Union. Mr. Gilbert enjoyed making knives, gardening, bowling, music and arts and crafts. He was one who could make anything. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife; mother and stepfather, Odessa and H.P. Hunt; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Debra Gilbert, Johnny and Cindy Gilbert and Ricky and Sherry Gilbert and Jimmy and Betty Gilbert; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn Gwin; Debra Key, Janice and Danny Cantrell and Cathy Dalton and Fred Ross.
