Bio

The Banner-Press (David City, Nebr.), December 14, 1961, p. 2, col. 2 Services Held For Joseph G. Purtek Funeral services were conducted Nov. 28, at Immaculate Conception Church, Ulysses, for Joseph G. Purtek, 74, who died at the David City Hospital Nov. 25, following a lingering illness. Msgr. Geo. Schuster officiated. Music was by Jack Webb. Pallbearers were Ronnie Vrbka, Joe Vavra, Jim Hernicek, Ray Pekarek, Delbert Martens and Ed Kouma. Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Ulysses. Mr. Purtek, son of Joseph and Anna Barcucikovec Purtek, was born April 7, 1887 in Marckovi, Czechoslovakia. He came to this country in 1901 and worked in steel mills in West Virginia and in factories in Michigan before coming to Nebraska to work on farms. He settled on a farm in Butler County and resided on farms in Butler and Seward counties the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He was married to Mary Vrbka at Ulysses on Sept. 14, 1920. Four children were born to them. His wife died April 25, 1928. On January 17, 1944, he was married at Dwight to Aloisa Nemec, who survives him. Other survivors include one son, Joe C. Purtek, St. Joseph, Mo., two daughters, Mrs. Cyril Urbanek of Ulysses and Mrs. Ed Hruska, Schuyler; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife and an infant son.
