WAS A PROMINENT CITIZEN. Joseph Dostal, Sr., Passed Away At Age of 93 Years. Appleton, Jan. 27 - Funeral services for Joseph Dostal, Sr., were held from St. Anthony's Catholic church, Bruno, Friday morning at 10 o'clock in charge of the pastor, Rev. F. J. Kopecky. The pallbearers were Joseph Markitan, James Polacek, William Kozisek, Fred Yindrick, Thomas Rerucha and Joseph Slossar. Interment was in the Bruno Catholic cemetery beside the grave of his wife who preceded him in death 18 years. Mr. Dostal, who was 93 years and one month of age, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m., following an illness of five days caused by blood poison and complications of advanced age, despite every effort to prolong his life. He was born in Czechoslovakia and when 12 years of age came to the United States with his parents locating at Spilville, Iowa. Mr. Dostal was united in marriage to Miss Ann Chacek in 1862 and came to Nebraska in a covered wagon drawn by a team of oxen and located on a farm near Abie. To this union 12 children were born, two of whom died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Stava died at Plattsmouth 11 years ago and Mrs. Lena Hlavac of Gregory, S. Dak., passed away nine years ago. The surviving children are three sons, Joseph Dostal of Prague, Okla., Edward Dostal and Louis Dostal of Abie, and five daughters, Mrs. Victoria Stava of Rushville, Mrs. Anna Andel and Mrs. Adela Dworak of Appleton, Mrs. Tillie Barcal and Helen Krenk of Linwood, also 35 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Charles Andera of Iowa. Three brothers, Leo Dostal, Frank Dostal and John Dostal, passed away some years ago. Mr. Dostal was one of the early day postmasters of Abie and held numerous offices during his lifetime. He was a justice of the peace, township assessor, a member of the County Board of Supervisors 15 years and served two terms as state representative 1900-1911. He was a Democrat and took an active part in party affairs. He was a carpenter by trade and built the first Appleton church and it was he who named the Appleton community. Joseph enlisted from Iowa City as 7th Corporal of Company "K" (the "Bohemian Company"), 22nd Iowa Infantry on 9 August 1862. He was mustered out with the Regiment in Savannah on 25 July 1865 (Paragraph provided by Jeffry Burden (#46873454). Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Dostal moved to Bruno. After Mrs. Dostal's death he moved to Plattsmouth. The past few years he made his home with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dostal. He was a faithful member of the Catholic church and had a large circle of warm friends established over the long period of years spent in helping to develop the community where he lived. Among those in attendance at the funeral from elsewhere were Mrs. Frank Stava and son, Martin, from Rushville, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Barcal and son, Arnold, from Linwood, Miss Helen Krenk and Mac McCrew from Seward and Mrs. James Kurk of Nimburg. ************************************************************ Card of Thanks - We extend our heartfelt thanks to Rev. Edward Jaworosky and Rev. F. J. Kopecky and to our relatives and friends for sympathy shown us at the time of death of our beloved father.
