Alva Lewis Sowers was born December 30, 1893, in Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, son of William Henry and Elmira Smith Sowers. He was also the grandson of Isaac and Ann Martin Sowers. Circa 1917, he married Ruha/Rhua Collins, daughter of Johnson and Elizabeth B. Johnson Collins. They were the parents of 3 children: Vada Pearl, Herman Henry and Amanda Marie Sowers. Ruha passed away in 1934 and Alva might have lived with his in-laws for a time after that. He passed away November 27, 1971, in Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland, and was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hewitt, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. From the WW1 Draft Registration Card, June 5, 1917: Alvah Lewis Sowers, 23, of Artemas, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, was born December 30, 1893, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a Miner for Fletcher Patton in Elk Garden, West Virginia. He was single and claimed exemption from draft due to Church of the Brethren. He was medium in height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. From the WW2 Draft Registration Card, April 26, 1942: Alva Lewis Sowers, 48, of Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland, was born December 30, 1893, in Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. His mailing address was Middle River Branch, Route 14, Box 196A, Baltimore County, Maryland. The person who would always know his address was Mr. Johnson Collins, of Flintstone, Maryland. He was employed by Glenn L. Martin in Middle River, Baltimore County, Maryland. From the Cumberland Evening Times of Tuesday, May 17, 1955: "A 19-acre tract was leased from James V. Weimer and Amanda M. Weimer, his wife, and 19 acres from Alva L. Sowers and Della B. Sowers. In each case the owners will receive $1 per acre per year for 10 years plus one-eighth of the money obtained from any oil or natural gas removed from the land." Obituary for Alva Lewis Sowers from the Cumberland Sunday Times of Sunday, November 28, 1971: "Alva Louis Sowers, 78, of Flintstone, died yesterday in Sacred Heart Hospital. Born in Artemas, Pennsylvania, December 30, 1893, he was a son of the late William and Elda (Shaffer) Sowers. Mr. Sowers was a member of the Artemas Christian Church. Preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ruha E. (Collins) Sowers, he is survived by a son, Herman Sowers, Flintstone; two daughters, Mrs. Vada Barnes, Baltimore, and Mrs. Amanda Weimer, Flintstone; two brothers, John Sowers, New York and Condy Sowers, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Abbott, Bowling Green and Mrs. Zelda Coffman, Smithsburg; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Scarpelli Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m." Funeral Notice for Alva Lewis Sowers from the Cumberland Evening Times of Monday, November 29, 1971: "SOWERS SERVICE. Services for Alva Louis Sowers, 78, of Flintstone, who died Saturday, will be conducted by Rev. John H. Buffenmeyer at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the Scarpelli Funeral Home. Interment will be in Mt. Hope (Pennsylvania) Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John and Louis Sowers, Russel Barnes, John Elisabell (sic--should read Isabell), Milton Bloom and Elmer Roy. Friends will be be received in the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m."
