Bio

Zelda D. Sowers was born in March, 1898, in Artemas, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William Henry and Elmira Smith Sowers. She was the mother of three children: Calvin Wade, Ernest G. and Thelma E. Sowers. It is unknown who their father was. In 1921, Zelda married in Allegany County, Maryland, to Theron "Thery" Coffman, son of George William and Mary Ellen McDonald Coffman. It appears there were no children with Thery. Zelda passed away October 8, 1977, in Smithsburg, Washington County, Maryland, and was buried on the 11th in Glendale Cemetery, Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland. From the Cumberland News of Saturday, March 17, 1973: "FIVE GENERATIONS VISIT -- Mrs. Zelda Coffman, Smithsburg, is shown holding her five-week-old great, great grandchild, Stacy Lynn Kifer. Next to her is Mrs. Thelma Barnes, Flintstone, great grandmother of Stacy; and Mrs. Helen Northcraft, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, grandmother. In back is Mrs. Virginia Lee Fix Kifer, Artemas, Pennsylvania, mother of the infant. Mrs. Coffman is the mother of three children, of whom one is deceased. She has 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild." From Obituary Abstracts from the Cumberland News: "COFFMAN 10 Oct 1977 Mrs Zella D. Coffman, 79, died 08 Oct 1977 in Smithburg at sons home, Ernest G Sowers; born in Artemas, a dau of William Sowers and Elmira Smith; widow of Thery Coffman; dau, Mrs Thelma E Barnes-Flintstone; sis, Mrs May Abbott-Cumberland; bro, Conda Sowers-Waynesboro; burial in Glendale Cemetery." Obituary for Zelda D. Coffman from the Hagerstown Daily Mail of Monday, October 10, 1977: "Mrs. Zella D. Coffman. SMITHSBURG -- Mrs. Zella D. Coffman, 79, Route 2, died Saturday evening at the home of her son, Ernest G. Sowers of Route 2. Born in Artemas, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late William and Elmra Smith Sowers. She was the widow of Thery Coffman. Besides her son, she is survived by one daughter, Thelma E. Barnes of Flintstone, Maryland; one sister, Mrs. May Abbott of Cumberland, Maryland; one brother, Conda Sowers of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. The Rev. Paul W. Heefner will officiate. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Flintstone, Maryland at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9."
