Born in the village of Zarubice, town of Hrotovice, county of Znojmo, Moravia, Austrian Empire (now in the Czech Republic). 1880 census (Linwood Precinct, Butler County, Nebr.): John Watavia (age 29, farmer, born Moravia), Mary (wife, 23, keeping house, Moravia), Frank (son, 2, Nebr.), and Mary (daughter, 1, Nebr.) 1885 census (same location): John Votava (35, farmer, Bohemia), Mary (wife, 30, Bohemia), Frank (son, 7, Nebr.), Mary (daughter, 5, Nebr.), Francis (daughter, 4, Nebr.), John (son, 3, Nebr.), and Anastasie (daughter, 1, Nebr.). 1900 census (same location): John Votava (May 1851, farmer, Moravia, immigrated 1876), Mary (wife, Sept 1856, Moravia, immigrated 1876, married 24 years, mother of 13 children, 12 living), John (son, Nov 1883, Nebr., farm laborer), Anna S. The remains were brought to Abie Monday and services held in St. Peter and Paul's church and interment was in the Catholic cemetery. '''''''''''' The Schuyler Sun (Schuyler, Nebr.), December 22, 1922, p. 2, col. 4 & 5 JOHN VOTAVA CALLED John Votava passed away at his home in Schuyler Friday after an illness of two weeks due to pneumonia. A trained nurse from Omaha gave him professional care during his last illness. Mr. Votava had been in ill health for the past two months. He suffered internal injuries at that time when fell from a tree at his house. The funeral rites were conducted Monday morning at the Catholic church at Abie and interment made in the cemetery near there where rest the remains of the wife who died in 1918. John Votava was born in Moravia, on June 24, 1851, and died at Schuyler, Nebraska on December 15, 1922, at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Novotny in 1876 in Bohemia. Mr. and Mrs. Votava came to America and engaged in farming in Butler county near Edholm, where they resided for 42 years. They then moved to Schuyler where the remaining years of their lives were spent in quiet retirement. The surviving relatives are the following sons and daughters: Elesew, Frank, Peter, all of Edholm, Mary Hojney of Eaton, Kan., Frances Bures, Libbie Sobota, Stazy Dworak, Agnes Ruterick, Vincent, all of Valparaiso, Anton, Blanche of Schuyler, and Joseph of Fort Omaha. Mr. Votava was considered one of our highly respected citizens. He was known as a man of industry and habits of right living.
