Houston Chronicle, December 3, 2010: Sylvester Simon (Sam) Vacek, age 93, of Wharton, died November 28, 2010. He was born in East Bernard, Texas on December 16, 1916 to John J. and Mary Prazak Vacek. He was a graduate of Holy Cross School, East Bernard High School, The University of Texas, Austin. He married Josephine Koenig on November 25, 1940 and resided in Houston for 40 years. He retired from Humble/Exxon Pipeline Company after more than 37 years of service, and thereupon settled at Wharton. He served in World War II with the 209th Finance Section, Station 114, ETO, U.S. Army Air Force. Mr. Vacek was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, KJT No. 40, Knights of Columbus Council 2500, American Legion Post #226, Exxon Annuitant Club, and Houston Chapter of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA). He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years; a son, Samuel S. Vacek; a daughter, Joanne E. Vacek; grandchildren, Samantha and Donald Vacek; brothers, John R. of Dickinson and Alphonse M. of East Bernard; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. A wake service was held at the Wharton Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, November 30, 2010. A funeral mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton at 10:00 AM Wednesday December 1, 2010. Internment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wharton.
