Alphonse Mark Vacek, age 94, died January 10, 2017. He was born on February 24, 1922 to John J. and Mary Prazak on the family farm in East Bernard Texas. The 11th of eleven children, Alphonse attended Holy Cross Catholic Parochial School and East Bernard High School. Alphonse lived his entire life in East Bernard which was only interrupted by his service in southern Italy as a member of the Air Corps branch of the US Army in WWII. After working on the family farm early on, Alphonse served as parts manager at Boettcher Hlavinka Co. from mid 40’s until his retirement in the early 80’s. He served on the Water Board for 40 years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a very devoted husband and a very good and loving father. He loved to garden and simply be outside with Mother Nature. In his retirement years, Alphonse enjoyed tending the Virginia pines on his Christmas tree farm and supplied numerous families in the surrounding areas with a freshly cut tree for the holidays. Alphonse is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Marie Dornak Vacek; son, Don Vacek and wife Ann of McAllen, TX; daughter, June and husband Matt Harriss of Austin, TX; grandson, Alex Vacek of McAllen TX; granddaughter, Robin and husband Billy Balmer of Boston, MA; and numerous great great great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Mary and Miriam Taylor for their compassionate care and all the kind folks at Elmcroft of Wharton for providing a safe environment for Alphonse and Marie over the past 2 years. Also special thanks to Michele and Richard Carpenter and Patsy Konarik for helping Alphonse and Marie to live independently in their own home for as long as possible. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard.
