Thanks to Find a Grave member Carolyn Brinkmeyer for the following: Rosenberg Herald, March 6, 1958: John J. Vacek, Sr., 84, of East Bernard, passed away on February 22. Born in Landskron, Czechoslovakia August 27, 1873, he was a prominent citizen in East Bernard. Funeral services were held there Tuesday, Feb. 25, with a Requiem Solemn High Mass offered by Msgr. J.A. Valenta at Holy Cross Church, assisted by Rev. Pat H. O'Connell and Rev. John E. Kekral. Interment was in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery here. Pallbearers were Daniel R. Vacek, Bernard J. Vanek, George J. Vacek, Norbert J. Janis, I.F. Vacek, and Richard Vacek. Vacek was a noted member of the KJT Lodge in East Bernard. Survived by daughters, Mrs. John A. Janis and Mrs. J.W. Vanek of East Bernard, and Mrs. Ed. J. Novosad of Karnes City.; and sons, Joe E. Vacek, Chas. Vacek, Alvin Vacek, Raymond L. Vacek, and Alphonse M. Vacek of East Bernard, Sylvester S. Vacek of Houston, and John R. Vacek of Dickinson; thirty-one grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; brother, Rudolph Vacek, and sister, Mrs. Frank Smaistrla of East Bernard. Preceded in death by his wife and one son, Frank Vacek. Vacek arrived in Galveston with his parents sixty-one years ago in 1889 and settled in Fayette County for four years, from where they moved as some of the first settlers to East Bernard. In 1901, he married Mary Prazak of East Bernard and resided in that community until his death.
