Son of James and Mary (Hagan) Haney. Married Maude Peck on May 31, 1904 at St. Mary Catholic Church, David City, Nebr. ''''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), January 31, 1918, p. 1, col. 1 A FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENT. Joseph Leonard Haney Met Death at Home Near Rising City. RISING CITY, Jan. 27 - Joseph Leonard Haney, 39 years old, accidentally shot himself Sunday afternoon, Jan. 27, in his garage at his home near Rising City, and died almost immediately. The accident occured about 4 o'clock. Mr. Haney was getting his car ready to use when a 22-caliber rifle was accidentally knocked down from where it was hanging and the rife was discharged, the bullet striking him in the side of the head. He was found by his wife a short time afterward, lying on the cement floor of the garage. The funeral was held in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, on Tuesday morning, Jan. 29, and the Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung by the Rev. Father Boll, who also preached the funeral sermon. Acting as pall-bearers at the funeral were Roy Snedeker of Spalding, Mike Powers, Henry McGowan, Gilbert Minnick, Noah Morgan and Clark Wallace. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery, David City, beside the grave of Mr. Haney's father, who preceded him to the Great Beyond a few years ago. There was large attendance at the funeral. Coming from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Snedeker from Spalding, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Miller from Loup City and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Parsley, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Garnett and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Welter from Litchfield. Joseph Leonard Haney was aged 39 years, 4 months and 22 days. He was born near Rising City, the son of James and Mary Haney who came to Butler County in an early day and built a home where Joseph Leonard Haney was born and grew to manhood. May 31, 1904, he was married to Maude I. Peck and they began housekeeping one mile from his old home and still resided there at the time of his death. To them two sons were born, Marvin, aged 11 years, and George, aged 10 years. Besides his wife and two sons, Mr. Haney is survived by his mother, five brothers, James, John and Edward of Rising City, David of Omaha and Charles of Norfolk, and three sisters, Mrs. Ella Branigan of Columbus, Mrs. Agnes Mulgrue and Mrs. Cora Harris of Rising City. Mr. Haney was of a cheerful disposition and was well liked by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by friends and neighbors as well as by his wife and sons and his mother and brothers and sisters.
