Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), February 8, 1923, p. 1, col. 6 DIED AFTER SHORT ILLNESS. Mrs. Mary Haney, Long-Time Resident of Butler County. Mrs. Mary Haney, a resident of Butler county for 45 years, passed away in St. Mary's hospital in Columbus at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4. Her death was due to kidney trouble. She had been in the hospital for two weeks, but was seriously sick only two days. She was nearly 73 years of age. Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, Feb. 6. Rev. Bernard Sproll had charge of the services. By request of Mrs. Haney before her death six of her grandsons acted as pallbearers, namely, Cletus and Frances Haney of Omaha, Marvin, George and Everett Haney and Charles Branigan of Columbus. Burial was in the David City Catholic cemetery. In attendance at the funeral from elsewhere were Mrs. J. Finch and daughter, Mrs. Ralph Stuart, and Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Haney and two sons from Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. J. McGowan of Wood River, Mr. and Mrs. John Branigan of Columbus and William Stevenson of Lincoln. Mary Hagan was Mrs. Haney's maiden name. She was born in Monstrevin, Kildare county, Ireland, July 6, 1850. She came to the United States in girlhood and was united in marriage to James Haney at Peoria, Ill., October 23, 1872. Mr. and Mrs. Haney came to Nebraska in 1878 and resided on a farm ten miles west of David City until Mr. Haney's death, which was on July 13, 1906. Since then Mrs. Haney had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Harris of Rising City. Five sons and three daughters survive Mrs. Haney. They are James, John and Edward Haney, Mrs. Edward Harris and Mrs. B. Mulgrue of Rising City, D. D. Haney of Omaha and Mrs. John Branigan and Charles Haney of Columbus. One brother, Peter Hagan, of San Francisco, Calif., and several sisters living in Ireland survive, also a niece, Mrs. Roy Snedeker, of Columbus, whom Mrs. Haney raised from childhood. Although in failing health for a number of years, Mrs. Haney always enjoyed life and was exceptionally cheerful at all times. ____ Card of Thanks - Our heartfelt thanks are extended to all who were so kind to us during the sickness and at time of death of our dear mother. MARY HANEY Stricken with uremic poisoning and complications, Mrs. Mary Haney, pioneer of Butler county, passed away at St. Mary's hospital in Columbus Sunday evening. She had been in failing health for several years but had been in the hospital for only two weeks. Mrs. Haney was born in County Kildare, Monstraven, Ireland, December 12, 1850, being 72 years old at the time of her death. When she was 13 she came to this country with her father. He later returned to the old country, but she made her home with her aunt in New Orleans. Afterwards they moved to Peoria, Ill., where in the early '70's she was married to the late James Haney. Mr. and Mrs. Haney came to Nebraska in 1878, locating on a farm near Rising City where they were numbered among the early settlers. Mr. Haney passed away 16 years ago. Mrs. Haney has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ed Harris, for the past eight years. She had a sunny disposition, was especially cheerful and loved to visit with her children and friends and always had a good word for everyone and never complained no matter how much trouble she had. Her request was that her six grandsons would be her pall bearers. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Jack Finch and daughter and Mrs. Ralph Stewart, of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Doran, of Shelby, and Mrs. Nora Brannigan, of Columbus. Besides her nine children she also took her niece, now Mrs. Roy Snedaker, of Columbus, when she was four years old and raised her to womanhood. She leaves eight children - James, Edward, John, Mrs. Ed Harris and Mrs. Bernard Mulgrue, all residing near Rising City; David, of Omaha; Mrs. John Branigan, of Columbus, and Charles, of Norfolk - and also a niece, Mrs. Roy Snedaker, of Columbus. One son, J. L. Haney, died four years ago. His widow, Mrs. Maude Haney, resides in Columbus. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church in David City at 10 a. m. MARY HANEY Mrs. Mary Haney, for many years a resident in the vicinity of Rising City, passed to the great beyond on Sunday evening, February 4, at 9:45 in the St. Mary's hospital at Columbus. She has been in failing health for several years, but was in the hospital only two weeks prior to her death. Only a couple days was she considered seriously ill, her death being a shock to her family. Mrs. Haney was born in Monatraver, County Kildare, Ireland, on December 12, 1850 and at the age of 12 years landed at New Orleans with her father, later coming to Nebraska, where she has since resided. Some fifty-one years ago she met and married James Haney. To this union was born six sons and three daughters, J. L. Haney, the only child preceding his mother to the grave. Her husband died on July 13, 1906, at which time Mrs. Haney went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Ed. Harris, of Rising City. Mrs. Haney was a woman of a sunny and smiling disposition, always seeing the bright side of life and doing for others as long as she was able to be about, in spite of her poor health. Deceased is survived by two sisters, one brother, one niece, Mrs. Roy Snedken of Columbus, whom she took to raise when but three years of age and raised to womanhood; her children, James, John, Edward, Mrs. Bernard Mulgrue and Mrs. Ed. Harris, all of Rising City; David D. of Omaha, Mrs. John Branigan of Columbus and Charles, of Norfolk. Funeral services were held in the St. Mary's Catholic church in this city on Tuesday at 10 o'clock, conducted by Father Sproll. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Pall bearers were by request of the deceased, her six grandsons, Cletus and Francis Haney of Omaha, Marvin and George Haney, Charles Branigan of Columbus and Evertt Haney.
