Bio

Thelma Violet Kocurek Gelber, age 75, of Wharton, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Dec. 14, 1935 in Corpus Christi, a daughter of the late Louis Kocurek and Leona Socha Kocurek. Mrs. Gelber graduated from Boling High School in 1954. She went to the Wharton County Junior College where she graduated from the nursing program. Mrs. Gelber married Henry J. Gelber on Sept. 21, 1955 and he preceded her in death on April 29, 2006. She worked for many years as an LVN at different clinics and hospitals in the Wharton area. Mrs. Gelber was an avid reader, she enjoyed arts and crafts, crossword puzzles, and loved spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Gelber was also preceded in death by two sisters. Visitation and rosary were held on Wednesday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home chapel. Graveside services were held on Friday, April 15, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, with Rev. George Kunnath officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Martinez of Wharton; son, Michael Gelber and wife, Gayle, of Wharton; sister, Flossie Dreher of Bay City; grandchildren, Jennifer Gelber, Candace Gelber, Matthew Martinez, Bianca Martinez, Brandon Martinez, and Brianna Martinez; and four great-grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are all of her friends and staff at Wharton Manor Nursing & Rehabilation Center. If desiring, memorials may be sent to the charity of personal choice. Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
