Died after a long illness Passing of Michael McGowan at his home on Friday Aug 16. Michael McGowan, respected resident of Butler county for many years passed away at his home in North David City on Friday, Aug 16, after a lingering illness, at the age of 78 years. taken ill two years ago, he had spent most of the time of his illness in hospitals, and though confined to his ben a great part of the time he bore his affliction with fortitude and never complained. He was born in County Lartim, Ireland in 1851, coming to America in early youth and residing in Illinois where on April 20, 1879, he was untied in marriage at Wilton, Ill., to Mary A. Shields. Mr. and Mrs. McGowan came to Nebraska and Butler county in 1883 and located on a farm north of Rising City which was their home until 1923, when they retired from farm life and moved to David City. Five children, tow sons and three daughters, were born to Mr. and Mrs. McGowan and with their mother survive. They are J.C. McGowan of Wood River, H.L. McGowan of Kimball, Miss Anna McGowan of Deweese, Mrs. Loretta Kosch of Bellwood, and Miss Catherine McGowan at home. All were present at the funeral. Mr. McGowan also leaves eight grandchildren. A man of quiet and unassuming manner, Mr. McGowan held the respect, and esteem of all who knew him. He was industrious and by hard work a frugality he left his family in comfortable circumstances. Funeral services were held a t9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, David City, with Rev. Father Wageman celebrant, Rev. Father Harte deacon and Rev. Father Reddy sub-deacon, and with sermon by Very Rev. Father Sproll. Solemn Requiem Mass was sung by Miss Margaret Graf and St. Mary's choir. The pallbearers were John A. Brym, D.E. Haney, M.E. Medinger, Peter Vanderheiden, F.J. Cockson of Shelby and J.J. Kirchner of Bellwood. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, David City. In attendance at the funeral from elsewhere were James Shields, Misses Alice and Elizabeth Shields, Mrs. Hugh Shields and Mrs. Jennie Murdy of Manhattan, ILL., and MR.J. McDermott and George Kearney of Wood River.
