Thanks to contributor #47983876; Last rites Tuesday for John McGowan. A former resident, John C. McGowan, 86, of Grand Island, died Friday in a Grand Island hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday in St. Mary's Cathedral at Grand Island. The Children's choir sang the requiem high Mass conducted by the Rev. Gerald Harr. Pallbearers were Fred Cockson, William Cockson, Alvin Cockson, John Kosch, Arthur Kosch and Leo Rickert. Interment was in St. Bonaventure's cemetery at Columbus. Mr. McGowan was born April 4, 1880, at Manhattan, ILL., son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McGowan. When he was a child the family moved to Rising City, where he grew up. He married Miss Margaret Ceceilia Branigan, Sept. 12, 1916, at Bellwood. They moved to a farm southwest of Wood River shortly after their marriage. They farmed here for 35 years. In 1952 they moved to Grand Island. Mr. McGowan was only semi-retired and continued to farm part of his farm until his death. He belonged to St. Mary's Cathedral and was a fourth degree knight in Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his widow; a son, Bernard of Denver, Colo.; a daughter Miss Mary McGowan of San Francisco, Calif.; two sisters, Miss Anna McGowan of Kearney and Miss Catherine McGowan of David City; and two grandchildren.
