The Peoples Banner David City, Nebraska January 30, 1941 Page 1, Col. 2 Death of Mrs Dan Powers Death came suddenly to Mrs. Dan Powers early Saturday morning at their home in David City. Mrs. Powers had been as usual, although she was not in the best of health for the past few years. Ellen Mahoney Powers was born in Hamilton Illinois on April 24, 1868 and passed away on January 25, 1941. She was a daughter of James and Margaret Mahoney and came to this country in the spring of 1872, settling near Ulysses. On March 28, 1894 she was married to Daniel Powers in the Catholic Church at Plasi, Nebraska. Besides her husband, she leaves her children, James M. Of Brighton, Utah, Adeli E. of Omaha, Leo of Palmyra, John of Omaha, Tom of David City, Dan Jr., of San Francisco, Charles of Oakland, California, Mrs. Owen J. Gary (Gray) of Omaha and Mrs. Rolland Hilleat (Hillyer) of Albion, also one sister, Mrs. C. F. Leppert of Omaha and four brothers M. W. Mahony of Portland Oregon, W. J. Mahoney and J. P. Mahoney of Lincoln and John Mahoney of Palmyra. There are twelve grandchildren surviving. One daughter Mrs. James Ward of Ulysses, passed away on January 3, 1940, also a baby daughter Irene, died at the age of ten months. Mr. And Mrs. Powers came from Ulysses to David City in Feb. 1939. Mrs. Powers was a member of the Catholic Church and alter society. Funeral services were held in St. Mary's church David City at 9:30 a.m. On January 28, 1941 with Rev. Maurice Downey of Ulysses reading the mass and Rev. William Murphy giving the sermon. The church choir furnished the music. Casket bearers were Larry Lambe, George McGowan, Ed Schmitt, William Ward, John Birkel and C. P. Morbach. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. The children and their families were all present at the services with the exception of a James of Brighton, Utah and Dave (Dan) and Charles of Calif. Those attending from far away were Mr. And Mrs. C. F. Leppert and son Francis, Miss Ella Donahue, Mr. Tom Powers Sr., and Mrs. Margaret Ward and son Charles of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Mahoney, Mr. W. J. Mahoney, Mrs Don Williams and Mrs. Helen Berry of Lincoln, Mr. John Mahoney, Mr. Will Beecham and son Bill, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Beecham and son Bill, (sic) Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Beecham and Mr. Francis and Bill Beecham of Palmyra, Mary and George Moore of Mason City, Nebraska, Mr. Jim McGowan of Schuyler, Mrs. Jelineck and son George of Bruno, Mrs. James Ward and children, also other relatives and friends of Ulysses.
