Bio
WILLIAM NEWTON4 COE (Vincent3, Stephen2, Edward1) was born February 26, 1836, in Polk County. TN. A young farmer, to add to his income he hauled copper by ox cart from the mines at Copperhill to Cleveland, TN. Well known to the citizens around Cleveland as "Newt" Coe, he served as a private with Company E, Fifth Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate Army. On August 17, 1864, he and his brother Jason were captured by Yankee raiders near Cleveland. Both changed loyalties after the incident, and on September 1, 1864, they enlisted as privates at Calhoun, TN, with Company A, Fifth Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Rifles, Union Army, to serve for one year. At the time of enlistment Newt stood six feet tall, had blond hair, fair eyes, and was of a fair complexion. Descendant's claim that toward the end of the war he hid for a while on an island in the Hiwassee River. A local widow supplied him with food. Wounded in the back while on duty in Brown Town Valley, GA, the last of April 1865, he was taken to the smallpox hospital at Gordon's Mill, GA, for treatment. The bullet had penetrated his spinal column, shattered a vertebrae and left him disabled. He was discharged June 26, 1865, at Chattanooga and returned to Polk County, where he bought several farms and reportedly owned land in the Chestuee Creek area. A wheat farmer, he suffered from his war injuries the remainder of his life. He attended Friendship Baptist Church, founded at Linsdale, Polk County, June 10, 1826. He died March 26, 1910, at his home near Wetmore, TN. Burial was at Friendship Church Cemetery. He reportedly had relatives at Bryson City, NC. He married (1) about 1855, Rachel Elizabeth Fox, born 1835, died before September 25, 1866, daughter of Abraham and Caroline (Dickey) Fox; (2) Amanda A. "Mandy" Fleming, born 1847 in Polk County, TN, died January 1874, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Shook) Fleming; (3) July 20, 1874, in Polk County, Martha Jane (Davis) Wilkerson, born December 17, 1851, died February 19, 1917, in Polk County, TN, daughter of Rector and Nancy (Lemons) Davis and widow of Gilford Wilkerson. Rachel Fox and Mandy Fleming were buried at Dickey Cemetery, Polk County. Martha Davis was buried at Friendship Cemetery.
