Bio

A heart attack suffered Tuesday afternoon, August 20, proved fatal to C. A. Schobel, prominent Columbus citizen and garage owner. Mr. Schobel was taken to the Columbus hospital where he passed away Tuesday night. He had been in ill health for several years and had retired from the garage business. Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the Untermeyer Funeral Home and then to the St. Anthony's Catholic church for further services. Rev. A. J. Kraus, the pastor will officiate, assisted by several other priests, friends of the deceased. Mr. Schobel first worked as a mechanic in the Tolbirt Garage, and in 1929 opened a garage of his own. In 1947 together with his brother Gus and Oscar Henicke founded the Schobel Garage. Mr. Schobel's funeral will be held on the day that would have marked his 56th birthday. Survivors include his wife, his mother, 5 brothers, Gus, Emil, Robert, Lester and Otto all of Columbus and tow sisters, Mrs. Martha _______ and Mrs. W. B. O'Brien of Houston. He was a son of John and Lillian Kallus Schobel. His father and two brothers, John and Gilbert preceded him in death. He married the former Frances Smahlik about 27 years ago. He was past Grand Knight of the Columbus K of C. Council and a past Faithful Navigator in the 4th degree KCs. At the time of his death he had the post of Admiral in the 4th degree. Mr. Schobel in the past several years was an ardent worker in getting the new parochial school built and he was to be found about the grounds almost daily, tending to the many small chores that are necessary for the upkeep of the school. His helpfulness and generosity to others will indeed be missed. He was fortunate though to live to see part of his dreams fulfilled in the new school and a sisters home with additional land was acquired by the parish with his untiring efforts along with other interested parties. Christopher Columbus Council, K of C of Columbus recited the rosary at the funeral home. Interment will be held in the St. Anthony's Parish cemetery. New Ulm Enterprise, August 22, 1957
