Bio

Mrs. Mamie Bird [sic], a sister of Miss Gussie Thomasson of this city, died of influenza at her home in El Paso Sunday, the 20th instant. The remains were brought to Wharton for burial, arriving Tuesday. The funeral was held that afternoon and was attended by a large number of the friends and acquaintances of the family. Mrs. Bird [sic] was raised in this and Matagorda counties, but had removed to El Paso a number of years ago. She is survived by one little daughter, about eight years of age, her husband having preceded her to the grave several years ago. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and was about 30 years of age. Friends of the family extend their sympathy to the bereaved relatives. NOTE: The obituary quoted above appears in a scrapbook (copied newspaper article) compiled by a niece of Mamie Byrd, dated April, 2010. The explanation reads, "Wharton History Museum - I was looking for information on Aunt Gussie's Post Mistress job when I found this obituary for Aunt Mamie. It was in the Wharton Spectator Newspaper, dated Oct. 18, 1918. The newspaper misspelled her name but it was Mary Eliza Thomasson Byrd's Obituary. Aunt Mamie died on Oct. 20, 1918, just three days after Aunt Gussie was sworn in as Wharton's Post Mistress." NOTE: Mamie Byrd had Tuberculosis and was in a Sanitarium in El Paso when she died. Influenza was just a contributing secondary cause of death. NOTE: Not sure why the Newspaper is dated Oct 18th, when she died on the 20th NOTE: The Death certificate states that she was only in El Paso for 5 months prior to her death. She wrote a letter to her daughter, Thelma, from San Angelo, dated May 18, 1918.
