Funeral services were conducted Dec. 9 for Anna Chmelka, 86, at the Assumption Church, Dwight, with Father Jerome Pokorny officiating. Rosary was recited Wednesday evening at the Wood Chapel, Seward. Bearers of the casket were grandsons Victor and John Chmelka, Vernon and Ray Policky, Arnold Makovicka and Joe Proskovec, Jr. Burial was in the family plot in the Bee cemetery. Anna, daughter of Mate and Anna Moravec, was born in Czechoslovakia on July 26, 1885. At the age of four she immigrated to the United States with her parents. She grew up in Saunders county. On Oct. 14, 1902, she was married to August Chmelka. They farmed the Chmelka homestead near Plasi until March 1918, when the family moved to a farm west of Bee, which was their home until 1946, when they farmed near Goehner. On Febr. 23, 1949, they moved to the present residence in Dwight. Anna Chmelka passed away at the Seward Memorial Hospital on December 7, 1971, following an extended illness. Preceding her in death were her husband, August, on Jan. 2, 1943; two sons, Anton (1946) and Victor (1956), four daughters, Lillian (1917), Mildred (1925), Evelyn (1935), Emily (1952), two sons-in-law, Frank Makovicka (1960), Martin Policky (1965), her parents, and three sisters, Toni Jisa, Mary Helman, and Agnes Pospichal.
