From "The Harvard Courier", Harvard, Nebraska dated Thursday, April 22 1937, Page 1: Lew Averill Dies From Leg Injury Funeral Services Held Monday Afternoon from Ivan Averill Home L. S. Averill, more familiarly known around this community as "Lew" passed away in an Omaha hospital last Saturday. Lew's illness and subsequent death started from a scratch on his leg several weeks back from which blood poisoning developed. About five weeks ago he was taken to the hospital for treatment and it was thought that amputation of the limb might save his life. Lew gradually became weaker, although he was given blood transfusions and all the aid that it was possible to give him in the hope that he might become strong enough to stand the operation. Most of the members of his immediate family visited him while he was in the hospital, coming from their homes in Wyoming, Iowa, and Nebraska. Lew had been engaged in painting paper-hanging, and trucking for a number of years and was well known all over this section of Nebraska. His truck routes before he sold the business to his son Rex, took him to Grand Island, Hastings, and most of the communities in Clay county. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Ivan Averill home in the south part of town, with the Rev. C. T. Hawes officiating. As Mr. Averill had long been active in the Odd Fellow lodge his fellow lodge members conducted the services at the grave, while the Rebekahs prepared dinner at noon on Monday and looked after things at the home. Members of the family living away from here who were able to get back for the funeral services included his daughter Virginia Jones and her husband, of Centerville, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Nolton, Thompson, Iowa; and Mrs. Genevieve Glur and husband, of Grand Island, Nebr. Burial was made in the Harvard cemetery.
