OBITUARY ARTICLE from Vernon County Historical Society: Harriet Appleman was born in Piccaway county, Ohio, March 30, 1845, and died in Viroqua at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Phil Appleman, May 22, 1922, at the age of 77 years, one month and 23 days. At the age of 25 years she came with her parents to Vernon county, Wisconsin and resided on Weister Creek until 1873, when she was united in marriage to George Hughes, of Sugar Grove Ridge, where she spent the early days of their married life. To this union were born nine children, Mrs. Enos Daines of La Farge, Mrs. A. B. Mossholder of Bloomingdale, Mrs. Monroe Clark of Barron, Mrs. Phil Appleman of VIroqua, Walter Hughes of Bloomingdale, Mrs. Ed McDaniel and Mrs. Tom McDaniel of Sugar Grove Ridge. Two preceded her in death, Susanna dying in infancy and Mrs. Austin Maxon in 191. ALso four step children, Arthur and William Hughes of Barron, Pearl Hughes and Mrs. George Appleman of Bloomingdale. She leaves 42 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. Two sisters survive, Mrs. George Brown of Barron and Mrs. George Weymer of Otterville; and one brother, Jake Appleman of Salem Ridge. Her husband died in 1901 and since that time she has made her home with her children. Being in poor health for the past sixteen years, and has received the most tender care from her children. She was a very patient sufferer, but hoping for the better. Her life was that of a Christian always doing something for others.
