Hyrum David West, born Jan. 21, 1898, was the sixth child and the third son of George Daniel West and Cassa (Cassie) Ann Walker; he was raised in a pioneer background. He attended school in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and worked at various jobs during his early years. When still a young boy, the scarlet fever struck the family causing partial deafness to Hyrum and three of the other children at home. They had to be placed in the deaf school in Ogden, Utah. Two or three older ones escaped the disease as they were away working. This tragedy caused a big change in the lives of those it affected. Hyrum was also very ill when the influenza epidemic struck later on in the 1920s. He married Stella Jeffs and took great pride in raising gardens and tending the yard of their home in American Fork, Utah. He and Stella spend much time keeping their home tidy. He worked as a gardener in the cemetery. Although they never had any children of their own, they were very kind to their nieces and nephews.
