He contracted scarlet fever, as an infant, and has been deaf all his life, attending the school for the deaf in Ogden, Utah, spending nine months of every year there all during his educational years. He was on the basketball team and learned several trades in the school. He enjoyed his brother, Owen, a great deal when home during the summer vacation months. they conversed in the deaf sign language. He is a great lover of animals and an excellent friend to everyone. he married a deaf schoolmate, Ive Hadley, and became the father of two fine sons. When his brother Owen left for New York City during the depression to find work, Owen's wife, Eva stayed 8 weeks and prepared the old family home for Rulon and Ivy to move into with their first baby, where they resided for two years. He also worked at the cannery. When the family home was sold, Rulon purchased a home in Salt Lake City where he has been employed at a large bottling works ever since.
