Daughter of George Daniel West and Cassa (Carrie) Ann Walker. Wife of Riley Carter, married in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA History. Mary Janet West, Carter was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Aug 10, 1888, to George Daniel West and Cassa (Cassie) Ann Walker. She was called Nettie all of her life. She became ill with scarlet fever when a child and her hearing was greatly impaired. She attended Pleasant Grove schools for five years. Because of her hearing, Supt. of the School, Mr. Driggs made arrangements for her to live with his sister, Lucille, in Ogden and attend the school for the deaf. She was 12 years of age. She attended school for four years there and it helped her very much. She liked the school very much. She played basketball for four years there in the gym; also she took dancing, religion, and sewing fancy works. Her gym teacher was Mr. Bush. She was the first star in basketball. She liked her class with Mr. Max Woodbury who taught her about the Bible every Sunday morning. She met Riley Carter in Salt Lake City, Utah. He worked as a first-class carpenter in Provo, Utah. He built homes while in Provo. He made fine furniture. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on Oct. 5, 1910. They had six children born to them: Milton Lewis, 1910; Clarence Riley, 1913; Ethel Cassie, 1916; Kenneth Warren, 1919; Melvin Stanley, 1922 and Arthur Bennie, 1926. She has a very lovable disposition and has been an excellent wife and mother to her six children in spite of her deafness handicap. They moved to Wilmington, California, Jan. 14, 1929. Her husband was employed in the shipyards there. She has lived there for 33 years and enjoys her family. She enjoys the visits of the Relief Society teachers and the Ward teachers very much each month. Her husband, Riley passed away on Nov. 20, 1950, in Torrence, California. She passed away on June 4, 1974, and they are both buried in Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. By Joan West Strasburg
