Bio

Master Chief Lewis Rollings died in his home in Springfield, Mo on February 8, 2004. Rollings was born in Taney County on April 17, 1923 to John and Sarah Rollings. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and three sisters. In March 1941 Lewis entered the Navy and served continuously for four years on sea duty during World War II, beginning on the battleship New Mexico, with the friendly occupation of Iceland in July 1941. Master Chief Rollings transferred to the Navy oiler Escalante in January 1943 and continued sea service in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets until after the occupation of Iwo Jima in February 1945. He remained on active duty until after World War II and the Korean War, retiring from the Navy in April 1964, Rollings was employed by the United States Department of Justice from 1965 to 1985, retiring as Chief of Utilities in the United States Medical Center in Springfield. He was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association, a 24-gallon donor to the Red Cross Blood program, and a 42 year member of First Baptist Church, Springfield. In December 1945 Lewis married Virginia Louis Bilyeu and she preceded him in death in June 1986. They are survived by a son and his wife of Salem, Oregon; a daughter of Columbia, Missouri and two granddaughters. In 1988 Lewis married Donna (Riley) Shaffer, who survives. Surviving members of the extended family include a stepson of Los Vegas, Nevada and a step daughter of Phoenix, Arizona. Funeral services will be at 1 pm Tuesday, March 2, 2004 in Greenlawn Funeral Home South with Dr Edgar Burks officiating Burial will be in Spokane Cemetery. No formal visitation is planned. Friends may call after noon today in the funeral home.. Memorial contributions are suggested to the United Way of the Ozarks.
