Feb 17,2005 Atkinson Graphic JOHN J DVORAK A celebration of life for John Joseph Dvorak, age 83, of Atkinson were held Feb 16,2005 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, with Father Luke Steffes officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by Farley Tushla American Legion Post No 86 of Atkinson were held at St Joseph’s Cemetery, Atkinson. Pallbearers were Rick Pospichal, Dan Smolik, Adam Dvorak, Scott Dvorak, Tim Davis, Heath Fecht. John was born Feb 18,1921 at Atkinson to John and Barbara Kodela Dvorak. He spent his life on the family ranch south of Atkinson. He graduated from Atkinson High School and taught in area schools before attending radio school and then joining the Army Air Corp. He enlisted on April 2,1943 at Ft Cook, Nebr, and served during WWII. He was a veteran and POW of WWII. He was discharged on Oct 17,1945 at Sioux City, Iowa. On April 10,1945 he was united in marriage to Helen Marie Mullen at Emmet. To this union 10 children were born. John was an avid promoter of Conservation spending 25 years on the board of NRD. His persistence was instrumental in getting Atkinson’s Dam rebuilt when it washed out in 1990. He spent many years coaching baseball and contributing to the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion for 60 years. His deep faith prompted him to serve humbly for his church. He counted his family as his wealth. His pleasures were a good fishing hole, a new born calf, a good bowling night, a competitive pinochle or cribbage game and, after retirement, a game of golf. He passed away on Feb 13, 2005 at Atkinson. John is survived by his wife, Helen of Atkinson, children, Patricia and husband Richard Pospichal of Garden City, Kan, Kathy and husband Steve Smolik of Jefferson City, Mo, Mike and wife Connie of Elgin, Jake and wife Michelle of Atkinson. Joe of Atkinson, Jerry and wife Trudy of Lincoln, Gina and husband Lyle Davis of Cozad, Mary and husband Mike Fecht of Wray,Colorado, Barb Leiswald of O’Neill, Lori and husband Jeff Blowers of Rising City, Nebr. 2 sisters, Helen Clifford of Atkinson and Mary Havranek of Bloomfield. 37 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
