Bio

John S. Dunckley Dies In Denver Funeral services for John Jeremiah Dunckley will be held at the Congregational Church in Hayden at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. Stevenson officiating. Uncle Johnny, as most everyone knew him, passed away in a convalescent home in Denver Sunday morning, Nov. 23, at the age of 90 years, seven months, 15 days. Uncle Johnny was the oldest member of a family of 14 children. His parents came to Canada from Ireland when they were small children and were married there. Uncle Johnny was born in Ottawa County, Ontario, Canada, April 8, 1857. The Dunckleys moved to Mitchell County, Kan., when Uncle John was 12 years old, during which time the Indians and buffalo were quite plentiful in that area. In the early 80s he and some of his brothers came to Summit County near Dillon and were later followed by his parents and younger children. Uncle John and Richard, his brother, held a contract for cutting ties for the old narrow gauge, Colorado, Midland Railroad of which many interesting stories were told by Uncle John. In 1888 he and his brother, Bob and John Hindman came to Routt County and filed on homestead claims in the Williams Park area. They returned to Dillon each winter for several winters, returning to Routt County in the spring until they had obtained enough livestock to keep them here the year around. Uncle Johnny was a typical pioneer. He lived a very active life and continued to manage his ranch until ill health forced him to retire three years ago. He leaves to mourn his passing four brothers, George Dunckley of Fort Collins, Walter Dunckley of Hayden, Charles Dunckley of Gresham, Ore,, Nelson Dunckley of Hayden; one sister, Ella Brooks of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous relatives--Steamboat Pilot, Thursday, Nov. 27, 1947, Pg. 10
